Washoe Education Association Pays Fees for Members, Families to Participate in “Run for Education”
The Education Alliance of Washoe County is planning the 2017 Run for Education to raise money for PE and nutrition in Washoe County elementary schools. The event will be held on Sunday, October 22 at the Outlets at Legends in front of SCHEELS. There will be 5k/10k races, as well as the Sparks Marina March and ½ Mile Kids Fun Run along with a lively Fitness Fair for children and families to enjoy a variety of athletic-themed activity stations. The Washoe Education Association (WEA), the educator’s union in Washoe County, has been a long time sponsor of the event. WEA President, Natha Anderson shared why the WEA supports the event.
Why does WEA sponsor the Run for Education?
WEA Members at 2016 Run for Education
We help sponsor the Run for Education because it helps our schools and kids! With the emphasis on providing more help towards PE and exercise programs, it is something our organization believes in and will work on to make a success. We sponsor our members and their immediate family because the funds raised stay in the community and help our community become stronger, said Anderson. The registration deadline is Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Register through your school run coordinator or contact the WEA at (775) 828-9282.
How does the lack of PE funding in elementary schools affect students?
Research and anecdotal evidence show how getting kids active – at a younger age – allows for students to do better socially and mentally. Our students need the opportunity to exercise their brains and their bodies with more consistent PE time. It allows for excess energy to be used in a more structured manner and also emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
What do you look forward to each year at the Run for Education?
The excitement on the kids’ faces as they are getting ready to run, but also when they burst through the finish line and get handed that medal. Also, how our community comes together. There are so many from the Reno/Sparks area who want the Run for Education to be a success, not for the personal gain but for the pride as a community.
What are you some of your favorite memories from the Run for Education?
The giggles as a group of first graders try to mimic Bruno from the Bighorns “warm-up”; the almost visual pride the ROTC cadets show as they direct people where to go. Last year – a teacher who reached her goal of completing the run and was greeted by her family at the finish line.

The Education Alliance’s Run for Education is one of the largest family and community running events in Northern Nevada that raises money directly impacting WCSD students. In 2016, more than 8,500 people attended, including 522 teachers, and 80 schools participated, including charter schools. There were 3,900+ runners and proceeds from sponsorships provided a $2,000 Kids in Motion grant to 52 schools to fund physical education and nutrition activities, impacting 36,664 elementary school-aged children. Currently WCSD elementary schools receive no funding for PE. In addition, proceeds support the Passport Program that provides assistance for WCSD secondary students on their pathway to career and college readiness.
