Education Alliance of Washoe County is seeking financial donations for laptops for Washoe County School District students whose families cannot afford to purchase a computer for distance learning. Education Alliance’s goal is to provide equitable access to technology for students to continue their learning and connect with their teachers and classmates, regardless of their means.
Many students without access to a home computer are likely living in poverty or very close it. More than 48% of WCSD students qualify for free and reduced lunch and more than 3,000 WCSD students have been identified as children in transition, or students without a permanent home. Children in low-income situations are constantly fighting silent battles as they try to keep up with their peers without exposing their vulnerable circumstances. They have been disproportionately affected by the difficulties of COVID-19 and they cannot afford to fall further behind because of a lack of technology for distance learning. We have heard numerous stories from educators about how excited their students were to connect with them during this isolating time, and we want to give the same opportunity to all students.
